In order to lessen the miseries of commuters due to transporters' strike, the Sindh police on Monday ran free shuttle service with the claim to facilitate the commuters. The strike call was given by public transporters against the recent increase in prices of petroleum products to pressure the government to withdraw its decision.
Spokesman of DIG West Captain Tariq Naveed said that the move would bridge the gap between police and citizens and play vital role in rebuilding confidence of Karachiites in police. He said the department had run free shuttle service from Safoora Goth to Numaish Chowrangi and from Quaidabad to Christian graveyard. The service, which remained operational from dawn to dusk on Tuesday, facilitated some 1200 commuters.
Besides that all DIGs have also directed their relevant police stations to engage police vans for the purpose especially for old citizens and children. Meanwhile, police sources on the condition of anonymity revealed that the authorities had already reduced the petrol-limit of police vans from 15 liters to nine liters for patrolling. They said that police vans were not allowed to cross the limit of 4.5 liters of petrol for 12-hour duty. Therefore, the law enforcers used to prefer carrying out snap checking at pre-defined spots rather than patrolling, making law and order situation more vulnerable.
On the other hand, the police department on the directives of its high-ups has taken such confident building measures, which were nothing but minimising the transporters' pressure from government.
