Supreme Court seeks data of complaints filed against Punjab police

The bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan here on Tuesday directed Advocate General Punjab to submit a statistical report showing number of complaints filed against police officers of the province, nature of complaints and subsequent conviction or exoneration during the last three years.
The court issued these orders while hearing a suo motu proceedings about the murder of a senior bar member Nassarullah Warraich. Earlier, the investigating officer of the case told the court that the murder was a result of an old enmity. He said elder brother and sister in-law of Advocate Warraich were also killed in 1986 following the same enmity. Later both rival parties had reconciliation, he added.
However, the officer failed to present police record of the reconciliation. He also failed to defend his failure to arrest the culprits. Expressing serious displeasure over the police performance, the court observed that the effort of the government in shape of "Punjab Criminal Prosecution Service" was only a paper work. Even one percent implementation to this effect was not seen by police and the prosecution department, the court added.
The SP investigation conceded that the responsibility of the police investigation was not fulfilled in the case. A Pakistan Bar Council member Azam Nazir Tarar informed the court that a three-member investigation team three days after the murder of Advocate Warraich had constituted on direction of inspector general of police.
He said bar leaders had been appearing and working with the police team but no progress was made by it. He pointed out that two of its members had been transferred while the third was present in the court. Concluding the hearing, the court directed the AGP to submit the data of complaints filed against police officers, showing their ranks, and also conviction ration and adjourned further hearing till April 11.
In case of alleged abducted maid Sobia, the bench directed Model Town divisional SP Investigation Ijaz Shafi Dogar to produce the girl within two days. The bench also asked the SP to release an arrested accused in the case if police found nothing from him but without taking bribe.
