Non-payment of power bills: disconnection notices issued to 47 educational institutes

Around 47 government colleges, educational institutes and offices of the Education Department have not paid the electricity bills of more than Rs 19 million to Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation (KESC) despite availability of funds, Business Recorder learnt on Saturday.
Reliable sources inside the Education Department told this scribe that the matter of non-payment of electricity bills by government colleges, centers and offices of the Education Department was disclosed when General Manager (Public Sector Consumers) KESC sent a "notice of disconnection of electricity" to Director of Colleges (Central) a few days back.
The said notice obtained by Business Recorder mentioned that: It is informed to you that a sum of Rs 1,9200008, has been accumulated as net outstanding dues against 47 meters due to non-payment of electricity dues as per our record.
In order to affect recovery, supply is liable to be disconnected under section 24 (1) of Electricity Act 1910. We hereby advise you to pay electricity dues within three days from the receipt of this notice. Please note that on expiry of notice period your supply shall be disconnected without further reference of the subject of the matter, letter stated.
This notice carried a list of defaulter colleges, centers and offices of Education Department including Government Girls Degree College Metrovell Orangi, Government Degree College Landhi, Government Boys Degree College (Commerce) Gulistan-e-Johar, Government Degree Boys College Kiamari, Government Degree College Kankar Gadap, Government Degree Science and Commerce College Durab Khan Road Liyari, Government Degree College ADJ Shaikh Zaid Cen0ter, Government S.M Science College Freer road, Government Degree College Razakabad Landhi, Government Degree Girls College Sector 34/2 Korangi, Government College Dr Ziaudin Ahmed road, Government Degree College Nishter road, Government Degree Girls College Sharafi Goth, Government Degree Science College Murad Memon Goth Malir, Government Women College Sharah-e-Liaqat, Sindh Muslim Arts Commerce College Mohammad Bin Qasim road, Government Girls College Mehmoodabad-II, Fatima Jinnah College Nishter road Garden, Government Science Degree College near Bhitai Hospital, Degree Girls College North Nazimabad, Girls College F.B Area Korangi No-6, Government Girls College PIB colony, Government Degree College Bufferzone, Government Delhi College F.B area, Sindh Fatima College Nishter road, office of regional Directorate Colleges Nazimabad, Government College for women Saudabad, Government Science College DIV Nazimabad, Government Degree College II-E Orangi, Quaid-e-Millat College, Government Girls Science College Baghdadi, Government Riaz Girls College Liaqatabad No-10, M/S Lashari Educational Complex Gizri, Government Degree Boys College Metrovell SITE area, Government Girls Degree College Model Town Malir, Government College Nazimabad, Government Boys Degree College Nazimabad No-III, Government College Nazimabad No-II, Government Degree College near Al-Noor Hospital F.B area, Government Degree girls College Block-K North Nazimabad, Premier College Block-H North Nazimabad and Physical Education University Campus Karachi.
In this connection, A high-level official told on the condition of anonymity that the Education Department is providing utility funds to every college and offices along with other budgets so that no-payment of bill is "negligence of heads of the said colleges and institutions".
