A former Russian banker is in a coma in a London hospital after being shot several times, police said Friday. Detectives said they were treating the attack on German Gorbuntsov, who is in his 40s, as attempted murder. He was shot on Tuesday as he entered an apartment block in the Isle of Dogs in east London, near the Canary Wharf financial district.
Gorbuntsov was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as "critical but stable". London's Metropolitan Police said it was hunting a man who was seen running away from the scene of the shooting. The attack is being investigated by a unit which specialises in gang crime, but police said it "is not thought to be gang-related". Gorbuntsov has been named as both a suspect and a witness in an attack on a financier in Moscow in 2009 which was carried out by Chechen gunmen, The Times newspaper reported, quoting the Russian press.
