The book, as the title says is about financial system and economic development, this volume - the second - deals with financial markets. We are in formed that the first volume about banking system is still in printing process by the book.
Let us know something about the author: Dr Shakil Faruqi did his MA (Economics) from Punjab University, Masters in economics from University of Pennsylvania, completed PhD from Rutgers University in 1972, taught for same time then joined World Bank where he remained for a long time, worked in many countries, led training programmes, was an editor of proceedings of the seminars published by EDI/World Bank till 1997 - worked as an Advisor to Governor State Bank of Pakistan for some time. He also published Glossary on Banking and Finance (English & Urdu). Finally has joined Lahore School of Economics as professor of financial system.
Looking at his vast and varied experience one can expect his books to provide in-depth knowledge about Finance and Banking. About the book itself the author says it is aimed at graduate students and those out of academia who are not familiar with financial markets of Pakistan in substantive manner.
The book is divided in to two chapters, every chapter deals with a particulars aspect of the operating system, every chapter further divided in many sections and every section has further divisions into various aspects. Thus the whole system is laid bare before the reader.
In today's world without discrimination of race, region and religion every individual is the target of banking and finance, this perforce has to know something about these matters - so this book is source of knowledge not only for the students, researchers, and people connected with financial institutions as professional or as businessmen. It gives not only theoretical understanding but provides guidance in practice. The glossary is an asset itself.
