Energy crisis: experts urge government to explore alternative energy sources

Speakers during the 1st day of 27th Multi Topic Symposium proposed the government to explore the alternative energy sources including solar and wind to meet its energy needs, as oil prices in the world are rising. The two-day symposium is being organised under the aegis of Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEEP) at a local hotel here.
In his keynote address, Adrian Wood presented various models for alternative energy, saying that solar and wind energy have become more feasible due to soaring prices of oil. He was of the opinion that solar and wind can be cost effective depending on the location.
"If you are in an oil rich country it will not be feasible but in countries where it is difficult to obtain oil and it is only available at very high prices wind and solar are now considered cost efficient," he noted. Citing the prevailing energy crisis in Pakistan, Adrian said there is plenty of sunshine and in some areas have also good wind flow so Pakistan should go for mixed solutions of generating electricity. He advised the planners not to be too ambitious as in some countries the planners became too ambitious and announced large projects with unrealistic deadlines, adding with each postponement and delay the big players lost interest.
He said Pakistan should start with a small project and a realistic deadline so that it can start its journey towards renewable energy sources with confidence and success. S. K. Pervez said that IEEEP recommendations have not been adopted which has resulted in the present situation.
He advised the government to take IEEEP members into decision-making bodies so that they can offer their expertise for the benefit of the country. In his welcome address, Tahir Saleem, Chairman IEEEP Karachi Centre informed the audience of the programme for the two-day symposium. He also gave details of recommendations given in the past based on the proceedings of these symposiums. He was of the opinion that government should pay heed to these recommendations.
