34 vice chancellors serving even after retirement, Supreme Court told

The Supreme Court of Pakistan was informed on Tuesday that 34 vice chancellors of different universities of the country were serving after their retirement and almost 19 VCs had been appointed more than once. The counsel of High Education Commission Amjad Bokhari told this during the course of proceedings of different petitions about the second appointment of Dr Mubashar Hassan as vice chancellor of University of Health Science (UHS).
Earlier Advocate General (AG) Punjab Ashtar Ali Ausaf submitted that the petitions filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against Dr Mubashar were based on malafide intentions as these petitioners were involved in different cases. "Under the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) rules, the age limit of a professor for private medical universities is 70 years while for public universities it is 60 years."
The bench allowed more time to AG Ashtar Ausaf on his request for further arguments and adjourned the hearing for Wednesday (today). Petitioner Punjab government had challenged the decision of LHC in which Dr Mubashar was removed from the post of Vice Chancellor of UHS. Later, Dr Mubashar himself challenged his removal. The apex court had temporarily suspended the judgement of LHC and allowed Dr Mubashar to hold the charge till the final decision.
A citizen Muhammad Sajjad Hussain had challenged his appointment before the LHC submitting that Mubbashar was appointed as VC on April 07, 2003 in terms of section 12 of the University of Health Sciences Ordinance, 2002. On July 31, 2005 he attained age of superannuation and stood retired from his service as professor but he was allowed to continue as VC in violation of section 47 of UHS Ordinance.
