Transport department in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to issue driving licences

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to transfer the issuance of driving licences from police to the Transport Department with immediate effect. It was further decided that driving license branch of police will work under the Transport Department and will be accountable to it in future.
These decisions were made in a high level meeting held with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Transport and Information, Mian Iftikhar Hussain in the chair. The meeting was also attended by Provincial Minister for Science & Information Technology, Muhammad Ayub Khan, Secretary Transport, Syed Amir uddin Shah, Secretary Information, Azmat Hanif Orakzai, Secretary IT Muhammad Humayyun Khan and DIG traffic, Mian Mazhar ul Haq Kakakhel.
The meeting, on the recommendation of Science and Information Technology Minister, also recommended two-year extension in the computerised driving licenses project so as the Transport Department could build its capacity during that time. The meeting also recommended the transfer of the ADP of computerised driving licenses project from IT Department to the Transport Department. Speaking at the occasion, the Transport Minister said that the steps were underway to bring back the scattered powers of Transport Department presently lying with other departments so as to make the transport system of the province in line with the demand of the time.
He added that during the past two years, the Transport Department made a tremendous success in computerisation of the department and issuance of computerised route permits were the big achievements of the department. He said that Transport Department needed drastic reforms for making it a public service delivery department in real sense.
Mian Iftikhar Hussain maintained, after completion of transfer of driving licenses project, the transfer of vehicles' registrations from Excise and Taxation Department would be taken in hand adding that the Transport Department already done a home work for the same. He said that betterment and reformation of the department was a big challenge for him and he accepted that challenge with open heart.
The Transport Minister regretted that in the past no proper attention was given to the department due to which we are facing deteriorating traffic system and daily traffic jam. He added if proper steps were taken in the past then today we would have an efficient transport system in the province.
