Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Haji Habibur Rehman said on Friday that a law was being enacted to root out terrorism and punish terrorists. He was addressing a news conference at RPO office. The IG suspended a DSP and two inspectors on complaints of receiving bribery.
He said that no officer would be transferred on just receiving a complaint but an inquiry would be launched against him according to department's rules. "If the official proves guilty, he'll be suspended. And those who still do not mend their ways will be booked," he added.
He told the journalists that the Research and Development Wing of police had evolved a new strategy on modern lines to control street crimes in the province. He hoped that the new strategy would help police reduce the ratio of street crimes soon. He said that dispensation of justice and elimination of corruption from police department are one of his top priorities. "I will not compromise on this issue. We will not only eliminate corrupt elements from police department but also punish them," he warned. He said that he would not just talk but show the results. He said that the police officers across the province were issued direction not to accept any political pressure and provide justice to the public.
He acknowledged that the police stations had become horrifying places for the citizens because of a huge gap between masses and police. "The distance between police and people has increased seriously. We need to cut it short so that citizens consider police guard of their lives and properties," he said.
