Egypt, the world's largest wheat importer, has bought 180,000 tonnes of US soft red winter wheat for April 11-20 shipment on a free on board basis, the main government wheat buyer said on Thursday. Nomani Nomani, vice chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC), gave the following breakdown of the purchases:
- 60,000 tonnes of US soft red winter wheat from Venus at $259 per tonne with freight costs of $26.99 per tonne. - 120,000 tonnes of US soft red winter wheat from Bunge at $259 per tonne with freight costs of $26.99 per tonne. This is GASC's second straight purchase of US wheat in less than a week. Russian wheat was not offered among bids. Nomani said US wheat offered today was better priced and added he wanted US soft white wheat as well as Australian wheat to also be offered in future Egyptian tenders.
