THE RUPEE: all-round slide

All-round decline was seen on the currency market on Thursday as the rupee slid versus dollar and euro in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee gave up overnight winning track in relation to dollar, losing five paisa for buying at 90.65 and falling six paisa for selling at 90.70, they said.
The rupee fell versus euro as well, shedding 35 paisa for buying at Rs 119.85, it, however, gained 15 paisa for selling at Rs 120.35, they said. In the fourth Asian trade euro hit a fresh two-month high on views that Greece was inching closer to a bailout deal even though Greek parties stopped short of signing off on austerity measures.
The yuan was little changed, as a strong midpoint failed to tempt traders to bet on further appreciation in advance of closely watched trade data due on Friday. The dollar/yuan spot rate ended at 6.2952, 9 pips higher than Wednesday's close. The small rise occurred despite the central bank setting a strong midpoint of 6.3009, 18 pips stronger than Wednesday and the strongest since the first market day of 2012.
The dollar in terms of the Indian rupee was trading at Rs 49.33, versus the Malaysian ringgit, it was available at 3.0075 and the greenback was at 6.295 in terms of the Chinese yuan. According to the currency dealers, there was no change in the dollar's demand and supply situation that helped rupee stability in the open market. The dollar was traded at its overnight closing of Rs 90.60 and Rs 90.80 as its buying and selling rates, respectively, the dealers said.
Similarly, the rupee witnessed no change in its value against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Wednesday closing level of Rs 142.80 and Rs 143.80, respectively, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 90 (buying) and Rs 90.20 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 90 (buying) and Rs 90.20 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 142 (buying) and Rs 142.50 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 142 (buying) and Rs 142.50 (selling).
