SVIS fails to achieve desired results: only 14 vehicles recovered

The Stolen Vehicles Information System (SVIS), launched by the capital police in August last year, has failed to achieve the desired results as the city police have only recovered 14 vehicles through SVIS and uploaded the data of only 0.5 million vehicles till to date.
"On one hand the capital police have so far uploaded the data of over 0.5 million vehicles from across the country through SVIS, while on the other the city Excise and Taxation department has so far registered over 0.43 million vehicles, which is raising the questions on the performance of SVIS system.
"The office of SVIS uploads on average over five cases of car theft from Islamabad and 12 car lifting cases from Rawalpindi on daily basis", an official source said. He said that main reason of low recovery rate of stolen vehicles through SVIS system was the poor interest of capital police. "After the inauguration of SVIS system strict directives were issued to the police constables deputed at different police pickets to use SVIS system for verification of suspected vehicles but they did not obey the directives", he said.
Source said that capital police had established over 200 police pickets across the city aimed at averting terrorist activities as well as controlling rising car lifting trend in the city. "Through SVIS police can determine about the status of vehicles whether it is genuine or stolen by simply sending an SMS to 8521 but police officials deputed at the pickets do not bother to send an SMS to identify a suspected vehicle", he said.
He said the capital police had established SVIS system in August last year with the assistance of Digital Seal Pvt Ltd. The officials said that under the system owner of vehicles from any part of the country would send chassis or engine numbers through an SMS from any cell number to 8521 after the sale and purchase of vehicles. "Write (CNO or ENO space Chassis number) and sent on 8582. Within less than 20 seconds all out details about subject vehicle will be displayed on his mobile," he said.
Source said that after launching of SVIS system there was no need to visit Rescue 15 for verification of vehicles after sale or purchase and now citizen can verify there vehicles from any part of the country. "After verification of vehicles through SVIS rescue 15 will sent the data to all police pickets for recovery of stolen vehicles", he said.
