Attack on Sri Lankan cricket team: LHC issues non-bailable warrants against three accused

A division bench of Lahore High Court on Wednesday issued non-bailable warrants against three accused involved in attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in March 2009 and directed police to produce them before the court on Feb 27. The bench had directed the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) to arrest Muhammad Ashfaq, Imanullah and Ubaid-ur-Rehman and produce them in court but none of them was produced on Wednesday.
The court had summoned all six accused but only three of them namely Mohsin Rashid, Javed Anwar and Abdullah appeared.
The bench was hearing Punjab government's petition seeking cancellation of bail earlier granted to six accused involved in attack on Sri Lankan cricket team by the anti-terrorist courts.
As the bench resumed the hearing, Model Town investigation superintendent of police (SP) Nasir Mukhtar Rajpoot appeared and told the court that the accused had not been arrested so far.
The SP informed the court that the families of three accused have changed their residences owing to which police were facing problems to arrest them.
The bench issued non-bailable arrest warrants of Ashfaq, Imanullah and Ubaid-ur-Rehman and directed the Lahore Police including Model Town investigation SP again to produce the three accused before the court till February 27.
Additional Prosecutor General Abdul Samad said before the court all the six accused were identified during the identification parade and they had confessed their crime during the investigation. A huge quantity of weapons and suicide jackets were also recovered from their possession, he said adding the accused were not appearing before the trail court that had hampered the trail court proceedings.
