Swiss franc flat versus euro

Published Updated

The Swiss franc was trading within sight of the previous day's four-month peak against the euro, the strongest since the Swiss National Bank set a cap of 1.20 per euro. The SNB capped the franc on September 6 at 1.20 as investors anxious about the euro zone crisis bought the safe-haven franc.
The franc was flat against the euro to trade at 1.2048 by compared to the New York close. The franc rose 0.3 percent against the dollar to 0.9146. Since SNB Chairman Philipp Hildebrand resigned earlier this month over a currency trading scandal, the franc has been inching towards the 1.20 mark as the market looks to test the central bank while it lacks a permanent head.
But the franc's gains versus the euro were capped on Tuesday by investors hopeful a Greek debt deal would be reached. SNB interim Chairman Thomas Jordan has said the SNB will keep the cap in place as long as necessary and use all means to defend it. The vacancy left by Hildebrand could be filled as soon as February, a paper reported on Sunday.
