At least two persons including a doctor and an activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) fell prey to targeted killings in separate incidents in various parts of the metropolis, here on Saturday. According to police, 60-year-old Dr Jaffar Mohsin Rizvi son of Dr Syed Badar Rizvi was shot dead outside his house early Saturday.
The incident took place at house (A-614) located in block 12 in the limits of Gulberg police station where unknown shooters targeted Dr Jaffar when he was reading a newspaper on a bench outside his house. He received two bullets on his head and succumbed to his injures on the spot. The body was transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where scores of people gathered and expressed resentment over the incident. SHO Raja Tariq said the deceased, who was the owner of Karwan-e-Ahle Abba and a trustee of Imam Bargah Ahle Abba, might have been murdered on sectarian ground as his family members in the statements confirmed that he had no dispute with anyone. He said the culprits used TT pistol in his killing and added that the victim was also general physician.
Meanwhile, Allama Abbas Komali and chief Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen Maulana Raja Nasir condemned the said killings and demanded government to take responsible to task. They said after the killings of lawyers, now doctors are being targeted on sectarian grounds. The funeral procession of Dr Jaffar would be held at Rizvia Imam Bargah on Sunday (today) after Zuhrain prayers. No case was registered till filing of this report. Needless to mention, at least 10 doctors lost their lives last year and now one more doctor fell victim in what appeared to be sectarian killing.
In another incident, an activist of MQM namely Muhammad Aslam alias Achra son of Abdul Qayyum was killed while three other workers namely Tahir, 35, Azeem, 52, and Ali, 35, sustained severe bullet wounds in a drive-by shooting at Ram Swami Area in the jurisdiction of Garden police station. Police said that some four unidentified culprits targeted them from the back when they were seating on a cemented dais outside Al-Khaleej Apartment located in Usmanabad near BP factory.
Resultantly, all four MQM workers received severe bullet wounds and were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi where Aslam succumbed to his injures during treatment while rest on them were admitted in critical condition. After committing the crime, the culprits managed to flee from the backside of the apartment.
SHO Zahid Hussain said the victims were active workers of unit 32 of Lyari sector and added that the deceased Aslam, who jointed KMC in 1999, was serving the said department as inspector and was a father of eight. He said the victim, who was the resident of Nazia Square, North Karachi, was assaulted when he came to Usmanabad to meet his parents. No case was registered till filing of this report.
