THE RUPEE: divergent trend

The rupee performed on both sides against dollar on the currency market on Tuesday in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee depreciated by seven paisa in relation to dollar for buying at 90.37 and shed five paisa for selling at 90.40, they said.
The rupee slipped against euro and shed three paisa for buying and selling at Rs 114.19 and 114.69, they said. In the second Asian trade euro rose on short-covering as risky assets drew broad support from data showing China's economic growth slowed less than expected in the fourth quarter. The euro rose 0.5 percent to $1.2729, its gains accelerated by stop-loss buying and pulling away from a 17-month low of $1.2624 hit last week on trading platform EBS. The single currency also climbed 0.4 percent against yen to 97.62 yen, staying above an 11-year low of 97.04 yen struck on Monday.
Interbank buy/sell rates for taka against dollar on Tuesday: 83.75-84.05 (previous 83.75-84.00). Call Money Rates: 20.00 percent (previous 12.75-20.00 percent). China's yuan traded slightly stronger on Tuesday but will likely hold steady between 6.30 and 6.35 against dollar in the weeks leading up to Vice Premier Xi Jinping's visit to the United States, traders and analysts say. The dollar was trading versus the Indian rupee at Rs 51.06 and it was at 3.1280 versus the Malaysian ringgit.

The currency dealers stated that the dollar resumed trading at its overnight closing of Rs 90.70 and Rs 91.20 on buying and selling counters, respectively. The dollar witnessed no change in its rate during the day's trading but finally it was ended higher on the buying side at Rs 90.80, while its selling rate remained unchanged at Rs 91.20.
The rupee remained under pressure and failed to maintain upward slide against the pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 139.50 and Rs 140.50, as compared to day earlier closing of Rs 138.50 and Rs 139.50, respectively, dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 89.00 (buying) and Rs 89.20 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 89.00 (buying) and Rs 89.20 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 138.00 (buying) and Rs 138.90 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 138.00 (buying) and Rs 138.90 (selling).
