Former Pakistan ambassador to the US Husain Haqqani has requested the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Advocate Akram Sheikh, counsel for Mansoor Ijaz in the memogate scandal case. In his application to the PBC, Haqqani alleged that Akram Sheikh had been issuing baseless statements that his client had received threats to his life in an email from Haqqani.
Haqqani termed these allegations baseless and an effect to malign him saying that Ijaz's email address was published in newspapers as a result of his own and his counsel's efforts. According to Haqqani, he is a law-abiding citizen whereas Ijaz's counsel's statements are creating false impressions and guilt which does not reflect well on a senior counsel of Sheikh's stature.
Haqqani submitted his application to the Disciplinary Committee of PBC seeking Committee's order for initiating proceedings against Akram Sheikh under the Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Act. He further requested the Committee to direct Sheikh to restrain from attributing or making false, incorrect and provocative statements against Haqqani in whatsoever manner in the interest of justice.
