Around 400 faculty members of the Punjab University on Thursday held a 'Merit Rally' after a meeting at the Al-Razi Centre for Undergraduate Studies, New Campus on Thursday and demanded of the Punjab Chief Minister to appoint vice chancellor of Punjab University on merit.
The teachers condemned the attitude of so-called representatives of Academic Staff Association (ASA) who wanted to appoint VC of their choice using political pressure. They demanded the appointment of vice chancellor only in line with the recommendations of "Search Committee." Recommendations of "Search Committee" in the appointment of vice chancellors in public sector varsities of the province were already being implemented which helped improve overall performance of the varsities.
The teaching community of the Punjab University had reservations that a pressure group comprising few teachers and students of a specific political party were making efforts day and night to appoint vice chancellor of Punjab University of their wish using political pressure contrary to the decision of "Search Committee." The "brave" group has been threatening and making propaganda against the decision of Search Committee that if the government appointed vice chancellor on the recommendations of the Search Committee they will contact the High Court and change the decision using their powers.
They expressed their satisfaction that the provincial government is No 1 in its good governance policy and it has handed over the task of Punjab University vice chancellor's appointment to No 1 "Search Committee." "As far as judiciary is concerned, we also consider that every citizen has the right to contact it for justice and we are also sure that the judiciary will decide the issue only on merit and in line with the law," the faculty members said. "We clarify it to the political party in the Punjab University, which is active to appoint No 2 or 3 as vice chancellor, tempering merit by using political sources and pressure, that the PU teaching community has kept an eye in every aspect of process of next PU vice chancellor's appointment either on merit or not and the teaching community will react fully on the decision.-PR
