Chairman, Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA-South Zone), Khurshid Ahmed has urged the managing director, Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) to exempt export-oriented leather industry from gas load shedding on Sundays and supply gas with full pressure to keep the industrial units operative seven days a week.
He said that severe load shedding of gas and low pressure has adversely hit the export-oriented leather industry in Karachi. Ahmed said that gas shortage had resulted in complete closure of the boilers, spray plants and dyeing drums. "The leather manufacturing and processing has been adversely affected as a whole rendering exporters unable to meet export orders," he added.
He apprehended that the exporters of leather and leather made-ups would not be able to achieve production targets and make shipments on due dates in compliance with agreements with its customers in foreign countries. The exporters may have to face penalties or cancellation of orders owing to shipments' failure.
