THE RUPEE: dollar at Rs 90.45

Dollar touched the high level at 90.45 versus the rupee on the currency market on Thursday on rising demand by importers, specially for oil payments, dealers said. The rupee fell sharply against the dollar for buying and selling at 90.40 and 90.45, dealers said.
Reuters adds: In the fourth session of Asia, the euro hovered just above multi-year lows against the yen and Australian dollar in Asia, as markets refocused on concerns about the euro zone debt crisis ahead of a French debt auction later in the session.
France plans to raise up to 8 billion euros in 10- to 30-year debt a day after a subdued German bond auction. Berlin attracted only slightly better demand than was seems at a disastrous sale last year.
China's yuan closed slightly lower after the People's Bank of China set the mid-point 114 pips weaker than the previous day's record high, the biggest fall in seven weeks, signalling its intention to keep a lid on yuan appreciation. According to the currency dealers, the dollar witnessed fresh demand that helped its appreciation in the open market. At the end of trading, the dollar was closed at Rs 90.40 and Rs 90.80 on buying and selling counters against the overnight closing of Rs 90.20 and Rs 90.40, respectively.
However, rupee recovered some of its day earlier loss and appreciated its worth against the pound sterling. The pound's buying and selling rates were declined from Wednesday closing of Rs 140.50 and Rs 141.50 to Rs 140.30 and Rs 141.20, respectively, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 89.00 (buying) and Rs 89.20 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 89.00 (buying) and Rs 89.20 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 138.00 (buying) and Rs 138.90 (selling) against the last rate. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 138.00 (buying) and Rs 138.90 (selling).
