"This is my best win ever," the 23-year-old Sugita told AFP. "We Japanese love a good fight in sport and this win has given me a lot of confidence.
"We are both baseline players, so there were a lot of rallies. To win in straight sets is a good start to the year." Sugita, ranked number 235, next plays Yen-Hsun Lu of Taiwan, who defeated Dutch qualifier Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-3. Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who was drafted into the main draw as the lucky loser after India's Somdev Devvarman pulled out with a shoulder injury, moved into the second round. Roger-Vasselin defeated compatriot Eric Prodon 6-4, 6-3 to set up a meeting with Wawrinka. Victor Hanescu of Romania ousted American Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-4 and will take on Raonic for a place in the quarter-finals.
