National Assembly on Friday passed the Carriage by Air Bill, 2011 under which a carrier is liable to compensate Rs 5 million to a passenger in case of death or injury due to destruction or damage to an aeroplane.
The liability of compensation shall be inferable for the benefits of the members of the passenger's family, including wife or husband, parent, step-parent, grandparent, brother, sister, half-brother, half-sister, child, step-child and grandchild as sustained damage by reason of his or her death. The payment made by the carrier in accordance with the certificate shall give him full and final discharge from his liability.
Defence Minister Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar moved the Bill to the house as passed by the Senate. The bill made the carrier liable for damage sustained in case of death or body injury of a passenger upon condition only that the accident which caused the death or injury took place on board the aircraft or in the course of any of the operations on embarking or disembarking.
