National Assembly panel for holding PEC election as per schedule
The National Assembly Standing Committee on Science and Technology Friday recommended election of Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) according to schedule. The meeting, chaired by Dr Abdul Kadir Khanzada, discussed the nomination of election committee convenor. Majority of the members opined that convener of the election committee should not be changed and the elections of the PEC should be held as per schedule.
The chairman standing committee was of the view that some stakeholders had serious concerns regarding the election process and convener of the election committee should be changed so as to address the concerns of the people. Majority of the members of the committee present at that time were of the opinion that the convener of the election committee should not be changed and the elections of the PEC should be held as per schedule. Five members of the committee have given their note of dissent in this regard. However, the committee stressed for ensuring transparency in the elections.
Later, Convener Advocate Anusha Rehman Khan submitted a report of the sub-committee as per Terms of Reference (TOR) assigned to it. Sharing findings of the sub-committee, the convenor informed that the issue was discussed with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which assured to provide the administrative support to PEC besides election training to the council's staff. While, PEC election staff would itself compile the results.
She further said that the sub-committee also discussed the matter of appointments made by the PEC during the period when the elections were announced and it transpired that all those appointments were made the following due process as per given criteria/rules. Concluding her submission, she said that the sub-committee has recommended for free, fair and transparent elections.
The meeting was attended by Roshan-ud-din Junejo, Shamshad Sattar Bachani, Abdul Qadir Pater, Malik Shakeel Awan, Dr Kathu Mal Jeewan, Anusha Rahman Khan, Advocate, Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Virk, Dr Nahid Shahid Ali, Shahnaz Saleem and Senior Officers of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
