General David Hurley, Chief of Defence Force, Australia, along with his delegation called on the Federal Minister for Defence, Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, in the Ministry of Defence here on Friday. During the meeting, wide spectrum of issues ranging from situation in Afghanistan, ongoing military operation in Tribal Areas and need for foreign assistance in capacity building of Pakistan armed forces were discussed.
Both sides urged the need for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan, in which contributions of all stakeholders was necessary. Recent improvements in the diplomatic relations with India were discussed and the need to strengthen economic ties with the two neighbours was emphasised.
The Minister for Defence appreciated Australian government for its economic assistance during earthquake and recent floods in Pakistan. A large number of Pakistan military officers are undergoing specialised training in the Australian defence and security institutions.
