The death toll from storms which have lashed northern Italy and southern France rose to seven Saturday, as residential areas and roads remained in danger from landslides. In Italy, six people were killed on Friday in storm-related accidents.
In France, the body of a man was located by police conducting a search by helicopter Saturday morning. He had been living in a caravan next to a river, which burst its banks in a flash flood the previous day. The Italian army was called out in the port of Genoa to clean up in the aftermath.
At Borghetto Vara near La Spezia, roads were closed Saturday for fear that rain-soaked slopes would collapse, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. In the Piedmont region, dozens of people were evacuated from slip sites on the second day of continuous rain.
