Pre-holiday and forward buying continues on the cotton market on Tuesday as mills and spinners both indulged in excessive purchasing as growers and ginners were ready to oblige them, dealers said. The Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) official spot rate was lowered sharply, by Rs 200 to Rs 5,550, they said.
Prices of seedcotton in Sindh were unchanged at Rs 2000-2600 and rates in Punjab also followed same pattern, showing no change at Rs 2200-2700, they said. In ready dealings, about 20,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 4,200-5,700, they added. It was surprising to note that the mills and spinners continued buying despite the delivery problems, dealers said. On the other hand, the growers and ginners did not wait for rise in the rates in the coming days, they added.
On Monday the US cotton futures closed lower on month-end liquidation and profit-taking as the market eased for the first time in seven sessions and may consolidate after its recent surge, analysts said. The key December cotton contract on ICE Futures US dropped 2.08 cents or almost two percent to finish at $1.0229 per lb, moving from $1.0114 to $1.0464.
On Friday, the contract ended at $1.0437 in the highest settlement close for spot cotton in six weeks. For the month, the spot cotton market was up 2.1 percent. Total volume traded on Monday hit over 13,200 lots, about 10 below the 30-day norm, preliminary Thomson Reuters data showed.
