Britain's Home Secretary says the country will roll out programmes pioneered in the United States to tackle gang-related violence. Theresa May told Parliament on Tuesday that teams of police, health workers and community leaders would use ideas which have had success in US cities, including Boston and Chicago.
She told lawmakers that "for too long communities have lived in fear of gangs," and vowed to match tough law enforcement with help for gang members to escape a life of criminality. Prime Minister David Cameron asked May to examine the issues after England's riots in August during which thousands of people joined looting and arson. However, government figures released last week showed that fewer than one in 10 people arrested for riot-linked crimes were gang members.
