Australian and New Zealand dollars down

Published Updated

The Australian and New Zealand dollars chopped around in slim ranges on Friday on uncertainty over whether a solution to Europe's debt crisis will be found at an EU summit this weekend, or later in the week ahead. The Aussie, which traded between $1.0203 and $1.0262, was last at $1.0217, down slightly from $1.0235 late in New York. It was on track to post a 1-percent decline this week, after a 5.8 percent surge the prior week.
The currency has been struggling to extend gains above $1.0300 since rallying some 10 percent from a one-year trough of $0.9388 on October 4. Also subdued, the New Zealand dollar was last around $0.7923, having drifted in a narrow $0.7916 and $0.7957 range. On the week, the currency was down 1.2 percent, following a 4.5 percent rally the previous week.
