Conversion of SWM into a private company: LHC seeks reply from Punjab government within fortnight

Lahore High Court (LHC) here on Friday sought reply from Punjab government within fortnight in a writ petition challenging conversion of Solid Waste Management (SWM) into a private company named Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC). Sweeper Union of SWM filed the petition and also challenged appointment of administrators following amendment in local government ordinance.
Advocate Rabbiya Bajwa argued on behalf of the petitioner-union that the privatisation of SWM under the garb of a new company was in violation of labour laws and also of local government ordinance. She said assets of the government had been transferred to LWMC and the private company had been given complete right to make any policy and agreements on its own.
