Toppling of Nawaz government: PML-N to observe Black Day today

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) to observe Black Day on Wednesday (today) to mark October 12, 1999, military take-over by General Pervez Musharraf after dismissing the elected government Nawaz Sharif. To mark the day, the PML-N has arranged functions across the country, in which the party leaders and office-bearers would deliver speeches to condemn the military rule.
A function will be organised at Aiwan-e-Iqbal in which party leaders will address and highlight their views on the country's prevailing situation. A number of programmes will also be organised in many other parts of the country. The PML-N Youth Wing will also hold a rally at Ferozepur road. Different wings of the party ie the PML-N students' federation, lawyers' wing, women' wing will mark the day by holding functions and rallies.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was overthrown in a bloodless military coup led by the then Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Musharraf in October 1999. In April 2000, Nawaz was sentenced to life imprisonment on hijacking charges, and he went into exile in Saudi Arabia after being pardoned by military authorities in December.
