Chairing a meeting at his office, also attended by senior officials of the department including Secretary, Syed Hashim Raza, Special Secretary for Health, Dr Suresh Kumar and others, he said the campaign against quacks would also be extended to all parts of the province in an organised manner.

"Unscrupulous elements playing havoc with the public health and putting precious human lives on serious risk can not be condoned under any condition or any pretext," said Dr Saghir Ahmed.

The Health Minister directed the health department officials not to succumb to any pressure of any form or by any quarter as this would amount to be part of the crime.

He, with specific reference to Karachi, drew attention of the officials towards mushroom growth of quacks in Lyari and Saddar Towns respectively.

"Unassuming people who are often resource-less too are the easy targets of these quacks," said the Minister.

He said the health department was already in process to restore public confidence and turn government hospitals and clinics adequately manned and well equipped so as to ensure that people may not be trapped by fake doctors.

The Health Minister said that increase in the incidence of hepatitis B and C as well as other blood borne infections, coupled with certain types of cancers, was consequent to exposure of people to unsterilised tools at the centres run by quacks.

"This can no more be allowed and have to be strictly handled," he said.
