The government of Japan decided to extend emergency grant, as additional assistance to the flood damage, of $10 million (approximately890 million) to Pakistan, in response to the UN Rapid Response Plan launched on September 18, 2011.
At the Japan-Pakistan bilateral meeting held in New York the other day between Koichiro Gemba, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Japan, and Hina Rabbani Khar, Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in which Gemba informed Khar of the said emergency assistance, says a press release received here on Wednesday. Pakistan has been hit by heavy rain since the beginning of August, which caused floods in the Sindh and Balochistan provinces, forcing many people to evacuate by destroyed houses and others and submerging of the agricultural land.
According to the UN, as of September 18, 233 people were reported dead and the total number of those affected could be approximately 5.4 million. Upon request by the government of Pakistan and in light of friendly relations between Japan and Pakistan, the government of Japan has made the decision to extend emergency assistance for humanitarian aid for those affected.-PR
