En-route cargo pilferage: intensifying of police patrol directed

Regional Police Officer, Aftab Ahmed Cheema, has directed that the police patrolling on the roads leading to the city should be intensified to avert pilferage of en-route cargo.
He issued these orders on the request of Chairman Dry Port Trust, Malik Muhammad Anwar and CPLC Chairman, Junaid Riaz who met the RPO on Friday and complained about the growing incidents of pilferage and plundering of cargo by organised gangs, especially near Samundri, Malluana, Khurrian Wala, Toba Tek Singh and Shorkot areas.
Chairman FDPT had informed the RPO that these gangs of pilferers break the seals put on containers and pilfer the cargo, which has become a matter of great concern for the local exporters. He suggested that the police patrolling on these specific places should be intensified so that the incidents of en-route cargo pilferage could be eliminated.
He told the RPO that the dry port authorities are already taking all possible precautionary measures, with active co-operation of customs department, for the safety of the cargo. This includes placing the 40 feet container, carrying customs and dry port seals, with its front towards the prime mover instead of the backside. This also includes joining the seals' side of 20 feet containers inside to help avert their breakage by pilferers. In Karachi, when the cargo container reaches the port yard, these seals would be minutely checked by the customs staff, he added. He said that the administration of the trust is making optimum efforts to improve its services to the exporters and importers of this region. Chairman FDPT said that the RPO had deputed SP Madina Town, Abdul Qadir, for probe into the en-route cargo pilferage who gave quick response and submitted a detailed report to RPO.
