Torrential rains in Sindh: Pakistan likely to lose major Kharif crops' targets

Pakistan is likely to lose its major Kharif crops' targets as Sindh has lost 95 percent standing crops in recent floods. Well-placed sources told Business Recorder here on Tuesday that 1.7 million acres of cropped area has been affected in 23 districts of Sindh while the total numbers of causalities recorded are 220 so far.
In the districts of Badin and Thatta, paddy is grown on 900,000 acres, cotton on 200,000 acres and sugarcane on150,000 acres. These areas also grow onions and tomatoes at 80,000 acres each and fodder at 15,000 acres. Around 200,000 acres of paddy was lost along with 80,000 acres of cotton in Badin and Thatta only. Sources said that 0.120 million women are pregnant in these areas and some 18000 are in critical conditions but due to continuous rainfall, it has become difficult to provide the proper medical treatment to such women. "It is the need of hour that the NGOs must come forward and help these unfortunate women", sources added.
