National Assembly Speaker asks provincial government to help flood victims

Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza on Saturday asked the district administration Badin, provincial government of Sindh and other government departments to take joint measures for provision of immediate assistance for the rain and flood-hit people of Badin and other areas of Sindh.
She directed the officials of different departments who were carrying out relief activities to make the relief process more transparent and timely. Presiding over a high level meeting at Gorlachi (Badin), she reviewed the relief activities. District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Badin informed the meeting that the more than 1.2 million people were affected due to recent rains. The district administration has set up 280 relief camps for the affected people, he said adding that 90,000 victims have been kept in these camps.
He said that special medical treatment is being provided to affected people specially women and children. Secretary Irrigation informed the meeting that breaches in Left Bank Outfall Drain (LBOD) have been repaired and on the directives of President and Prime Minister of Pakistan a special programme has been devised for drainage from LBOD.
He said that the drainage capacity of LBOD is 400 cusecs and recent floods caused devastation in LBOD. Speaker National Assembly directed the department of irrigation to further strengthen the banks of different canals and take immediate measures for drainage of floodwater. She asked Pakistan Air Force (PAF) to cooperate with the relief departments to provide immediate relief goods to the affected people. She also appreciated the relief work of Naval officials.
