Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Wednesday forecast widespread rains for Sindh, southern Punjab and eastern Balochistan during next 24-48 hours. The Met office said this weather system has potential to produce widespread thundershowers/rains in most parts of Sindh and Eastern parts of Balochistan, with possibility of isolated heavy downpour.
In a special advisory Met office said that widespread rains/thundershowers, very heavy at times, are expected in South Eastern parts of Sindh (Hyderabad & Mirpurkhas divisions). Karachi may also receive moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers during next 24 hours.
The Met office warned that possibility of localised/urban flooding in some parts of Sindh and flash flooding in hill torrents of Balochistan cannot be ruled out. In its daily weather forecast for Thursday, the Met office said widespread rain/thundershower with isolated heavy falls are expected in Sindh, whereas scattered rain/thundershower is likely in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Bahawalpur, Hazara, D.I.Khan, D.G.Khan, Multan, Zhob, Kalat, Sibbi divisions and Kashmir.
Meanwhile widespread rain/thundershower occurred in southern-eastern Sindh, whereas isolated rain/thundershower in Rawalpindi division and Kashmir on Wednesday. Chief rainfall (in mm) during the last 24 hours in Sindh province as follows: Mithi.309 mm, Nagarparkar 140 mm, Chechro 132 mm, Diplo 48 mm, Chorr 36 mm, Garidopatta 30, mm Badin 15, Hyderabad 12 mm.
In its daily report Flood Warning Centre said on Wednesday that river Ravi at Balloki is in low flood level. All the other major rivers are flowing below low flood level. Wapda rivers flows and reservoirs level report. According to a WAPDA report the position of the river inflows/outflows and the reservoirs levels on Wednesday was as under:
Inflow in River Indus at Tarbela 2,29,600 cusecs, Chashma 1,96,800 cusecs, Taunsa 1,70,200 cusecs, Guddu 1,38,800 cusecs, Sukkur 1,09,990 cusecs and Kotri 40,841 cusecs. Sindh Irrigation engineers are releasing 21,238 cusecs fresh water into the Indus delta downstream the Kotri barrage. River Kabul is flowing with 45,000 cusecs water at Nowshera, River Jhelum with 23,200 cusecs at Mangla and river Chenab at Marala 64,400 cusecs.
Due to heavy rains in the upper regions of the country water availability in the three reservoirs Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma has improved. The Indus River System Authority has so far stored more than 9 MAF water in the dams, Tarbela 4.5 MAF, Mangla 4.4 MAF and Chashma 0.10 MAF water for sowing maturing winter crops. However, this is much below the target at this stage of monsoon.
