The rupee moved up on the currency market on Tuesday during the smooth supply of dollars, dealers said. The rupee maintained firm trend versus the US currency, gaining seven paisa for buying at 86.40 and rose by six paisa for selling at 86.45, they said.
Risk-related currencies found some respite after Asian bourses bounced off intraday lows with Tokyo's stock market trimming losses to 1.7 percent from more than four percent and Seoul shares recouping more than a half of more than eight percent intraday falls.
Indian rupee was trading at Rs 44.97 versus dollar, Malaysian ringgit was at 3.0440 in terms of the greenback and Chinese yuan was at 6.4414 in relation to the US currency.

According to dealers, the dollar was purchased and sold at Rs 86.00 and Rs 86.20 as compared to overnight Rs 86.00 and Rs 86.30, respectively. Similarly, the rupee improved against pound sterling. The pound's buying rate remained unchanged at Rs 140.70 while its selling rate was declined from Rs 142.00 to Rs 141.50, dealers said.
