Karachi situation: Jamaat-e-Islami will soon call national conference

The Jamaat-e-Islami will soon convene a national conference on the Karachi situation to build pressure on the government for restoring peace in the port city, JI Secretary General, Liaquat Baloch, said here on Tuesday. He said, the Karachi situation was alarming, the police and rangers had failed only because the federal and the provincial government were not serious in combating crime in the mega city.
He said, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik's announcement for an aerial supervision of Karachi would never materialise like his earlier announcements. The PPP, the MQM and the ANP were patronising the criminals, he added. He called for strict enforcement of law and cleansing the port city of arms and ammunition so as to bring peace there.
Liaquat Baloch said that no law-enforcing agency could play an effective role in Karachi as long as the extortionists, drug dealers and mafias were not turned out of the political parties. He said that in the presence of the Sindh Governor, the MQM was practically a part of the Sindh government.
The state institutions had been paralysed due to the corruption and wrong policies of the ruling parties. He warned that if peace was not restored in Karachi, its flames would spread over the whole country.
Commenting on the Army Chief's statement that the army had no authority to hold talks with the militants, that no military operation was going on in Baluchistan, and that the army had nothing to do with the mutilated bodies of the missing persons, Liaquat Baloch said this implied that the entire responsibility for the unrest in Baluchistan lay with the Federal and the Baluchistan government. In such a situation, he said, President Zardari and the Baluchistan Chief Minister should explain to the nation who was the forces behind the use of force and the mutilated dead bodies being found around.
