The dollar hit the high level against the rupee on the local currency market on Monday due to strong buying by importers, dealers said. The rupee fell sharply against the US currency losing 23 paisa for buying at 86.78 and lost 21 paisa for selling at 86.80, they said.
Commodity currencies climbed with the New Zealand dollar hitting a fresh post-float high against the US dollar, and the Australian dollar nearing a 29-year peak hit last week.
The yuan closed up against dollar after hitting a record trading high on Monday, as the People's Bank of China set an all-time high mid-point fixing, following the sinking dollar index. According to dealers, the dollar commenced trading at last week's Rs 86.10 and Rs 86.25 as buying and selling rates, and moved up to Rs 86.15 and Rs 86.35 respectively.
However, the rupee recovered some of its earlier loss on buying side while it remained unchanged on selling side against pound sterling. The pound was purchased and sold at Rs 140.50 and Rs 141.50 as compared to last Saturday closing of Rs 140.80 and Rs 141.50 respectively, dealers said.
The dollar resumed trading at Rs 86.00 (buying) and Rs 86.30 (selling) against same last rates. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 86.00 (buying) and Rs 86.30 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 138.30 (buying) and Rs 138.45 (selling) against same overnight values. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 138.30 (buying) and Rs 138.45 (selling).
