Republicans in the House of Representatives have presented a foreign aid bill that restricts US taxpayer dollars to Pakistan if it should refuse to cooperate in the US effort against terrorist threats. The legislation released Tuesday also would ban giving federal money to international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information, an effort to reverse Obama administration policy.
The overall bill totals $47.2 billion and is $3.6 billion less than President Barack Obama requested. The bill would cut US contributions to the United Nations and trim spending for the US Agency for International Development. Aid to Pakistan would be contingent on the secretary of state''s reassurance to Congress that Islamabad was helping combat terrorism. The House Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations will consider the legislation on Wednesday.
