European Union Scoping mission for Climate Change Programme

During the meeting, Dr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Chairman PARC, briefed the delegation about the working of four divisions which include,  Plant Sciences, Animal Sciences, Natural Resources and Social Sciences at PARC and research activities being carried out by the organization through its establishments located in diverse agro-ecological zones of the country and focused on specific and emerging researchable issues of the ecology, says a statement issued here Thursday.

It was noted that the purpose of Scoping Mission of European Union Delegation visit was to explore and identify interventions and alternatives through which the European Union can support the Government of Pakistan and build its capacity to address climate change the causes and effects of climate change from a natural and human environment perspectives.

The delegation also visited National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC) where the management briefed the delegation about the ongoing research activities particularly those focused on emerging threats of drought and heat as a result of climate change.

The delegation was given presentations on the work of Wheat Wide Crosses Lab regarding heat and drought tolerance in wheat, the staple food crop of Pakistan, and on the water scenario by the scientist of Water Resources Research Institute, NARC.

Discussions were held regarding creating awareness among the people of Pakistan in general and farming community in particular.

Emphasis was given to integrate climate change concerns in relevant policies and strategies, taking into account the ongoing process of devolution and the challenges associated with it.
