Shifting of fruit market: authorities issued notice for September 8
Lahore High Court here Friday issued notices for September 8 to Commissioner Lahore, District Co-ordination Officer, TMO Gulberg and Model Town Superintendent of Police in a contempt petition filed by the traders of Kot Lakhpat fruit and vegetable market.
The petitioners, including Abdul Ghafoor and others, pleaded that the high court in March 2011 had stayed shifting of Kot Lakhpat market but the Commissioner and DCO ordered shifting of the market to Hadiara. They said following the orders of the district authorities, TMO Gulberg along with the police carried out an operation on July 11, last and bulldozed their shops.
They said the police also tortured the traders when they offered resistance against the 'illegal' act of evacuating the market and arrested hundreds of traders. The petitioners said the act of the district government was in sheer violation of high court orders as the stay was intact case against shifting of the market. They prayed to the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against district authorities and police.
