Blood donation to be given on Benazir Bhutto's birthday anniversary

The General Secretary PPP Sindh Taj Hyder has said that the services of Provincial Health Department and major blood bank organisations in Sindh would be utilised to maintain cold chain and proper screening of the blood to be donated by youths to mark the birth anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto to be celebrated on June 20 2011.
Talking to official media, Taj Hyder said that Benazir Bhutto has scarified her life for the cause of country and nation and to present blood for the lives of other deserving people would be best way to pay tribute to her.
He said that the campaign to collect the blood on the birth anniversary of Benazir Bhutto would be started from June 20, 2011 and will continue for 3 days preferably in evening hours, due to very high temperatures in all over Sindh. He said that with an aim to strictly adhere to international protocol for blood collection, reception & registration camps would be put up only outside the hospitals preferably at district hospitals.
He said that services of Provincial Health Department and renowned blood bank organisations including Hussaini Blood Bank, Fatimid Blood Bank, Sukkur Blood Bank and Nawabshah Thalassemia Centre would be utilised to carryout technical procedures for the collection, preservation and screening of the blood in the safe and secure atmosphere.
He said that the Hussaini Blood Bank has been assigned to look after the collection of the blood at District East and West Karachi, Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Kandhkot, Thatta, Badin and Tharparkar, while Fatimed Blood Bank has been tasked at districts Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Khairpur, Dadu, Matiari, Central and South Karachi. Similarly Sukkur Blood Bank to look after at Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Ghotki, Qambar/Shahdadkot and Malir Karachi. Besides Nawabshah Thalassemia Centre to supervise at districts Benazirabad, Nausheroferoze and Sanghar.
He said that the storage capacity in public and private organisations in the province is estimated up to 15,000 bags, while the blood collection is expected to be higher than this figure. However, it has been decided that the surplus consignment of donated blood to be dispatched to other provinces, as a gesture of goodwill and solidarity.
He said that the screening procedure to be followed strictly in accordance with the International Protocols and Partner Blood Bank will do first phase screening of every blood bag against all the communicable diseases listed in International Protocols. Second phase screening shall be carried out by all recipient organisations who will receive blood from the blood banks. As per procedure, particulars (code numbers) of every blood donor will be given on the bag containing blood donated by him. It will thus be very easy to track back the donor if during screening it is found that the donor was carrying some communicable diseases.
