Outstanding power arrears: Pesco issues deadline to federal, provincial departments

Peshawar Electricity Supply Company (Pesco) has issued notices to federal and provincial governments departments, asking to deposit their outstanding arrears before Monday June 6, 2011. The company has outstanding arrears of rupees 38,563 million against different defaulter federal government departments & persons, provincial govt departments Rs 1,103 million, federal govt departments Rs 2,004 million and private consumers Rs 34,456/.
The company, in its notices, has asked the defaulters for depositing the outstanding arrears, saying that in case of non-compliance, their supply would be disconnected without any further notice. Meanwhile, some of the defaulting government departments have started paying their outstanding arrears.
It is worth mentioning here that one of the main cause of the deficit of the Pesco is long outstanding arrears against government departments, resultantly, the company is facing difficulties in order to complete all the ongoing developmental schemes and provision of facilities to the customers.
Chief Executive Pesco, Mohammad Wali has directed the field staff for launching a recovery and disconnection campaign against the defaulting government departments that have failed to deposit their outstanding arrears. Pesco has again requested all defaulting government departments and general public, in their own interest, to deposit their outstanding arrears before the deadline so that they may not face inconvenience.
The company has outstanding arrears of Rs 2,068m against Chief Secretary AJK, Additional Chief Secretary Rs 279, Secretary State Front: Rs 229m, Commandant Militia Rs 24m, Ministry of Railways Rs 16m, Ministry of Education Rs 11m, Vice Chancellor University of Peshawar, Rs two million, Chief Engineer CRBC Rs eight million.
SE Pak PWD Rs seven million, General Manager Ghazi Brotha Rs five million, Vice Chancellor Gomal University Rs five million, University of Engineering & Technology, Peshawar, Rs two million, SE (GSO) Peshawar, Rs five million, PCSIR Rs six million, Chief Secretary, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Rs 11m, National Highway Authority (NHA), Rs four million, Military Farm Rs six million and Political Agent, Kurram Agency Rs two million respectively. It said that the company also intends to publish the names in of the other defaulters in case they fail in depositing of their electricity dues.
Moreover, Board of Directors of Pesco, in its 58th meeting held at Wapda House Peshawar, passed a resolution demanding that Power (Energy) Excellence Centre should be established at University of Engineering & Technology, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Water Excellence Centre is working in Sindh province and "Agriculture Excellence Centre" in Punjab.
