70 percent say licenses, permits can only be acquired through bribe, influence: Gallup Pakistan survey

More than two thirds (70 percent) of Pakistanis are of the firm belief that permit and licenses could only be acquired through bribe or personal contacts. According to a survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, 70 per cent Pakistanis are of the belief that permits and licenses can only be acquired by giving bribe or by using personal contacts.
While only one fourth (21 percent) feel that this is not so, one could get permit or licensee without bribe or personal contacts. "In the survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked if they agree or disagree with the following statement, "Permits and Licenses can be acquired only through bribe or 'source'." Results show that as many as 70 per cent respondents said they agree with this statement while 21 per cent said they disagree and 9 per cent did not respond," Gallup Pakistan said.
A detailed analysis of the data reveals that relatively well-off respondents (earning over Rs 30,000 a month) appear to be more skeptical about the issuing of permits and licenses in the country with 75 per cent saying that these can be acquired only through bribe or personal contact. On the other hand, 62 per cent low income respondents (earning upto Rs 7000 a month) shared this opinion. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2746 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during April 2010.
