Thousands of people visited the Punjab University book fair 2011 organised by the administration, faculty and students, on third and last day. PPP General Secretary Jahangir Badr, former Provincial Minister Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Provincial Education Minister Mian Mujtba Shuja-ur-Rehman, anchorperson Mubashar Luqman, poet Amjad Islam Amjad, columnist Dr Ajmal Niazi, IG Prisons Kaukab Nadeem Warraich, Syed Noor, Raja Munawar, research scholars, faculty member and a large number of students visited and purchased books of their interest.
As many as 15,000 books on first day and 18,000 books on second day were sold during the book fair. PPP General Secretary Jahangir Badr said positive activities like this book fair were the dire need of society and PU administration really deserve much appreciation on providing books on discounted prices for the promotion of reading in the society. He said academic environment developed leadership skills in the PPP leaders. He urged the need to eliminate disparity in education system and said education must be provided to every child of the country.
He said in the coming days, only educated people, especially in the third world, would have power to counter with the problems. He said increasing poverty would soon end capital system in the country. He appreciated the education-friendly policies of VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and said he had made the greatest alma mater a "Centre of Excellence" and was serving the upcoming generations. He said the education would determine the future of Pakistan. He also stressed the need to increase scholarship and said people coming from foreign countries would have to be provided opportunities to serve the country.
PU vice-chancellor Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran appreciated the efforts of administrative officials, faculty members and students to make the book fair a success. He said the purpose of organising book fair was to promote book reading culture in the society and ensure the provision of books on unbelievable discounted rates to book-lovers at one place. He said knowledge was the real source of power and educated nations are enjoying power and respect among the comity of nations while backwardness was the destiny of illiterate nations.
