Engro Fertilizers Limited has been operating in Pakistan for almost half a century and it is one of the biggest conglomerates in Pakistan. Engro's Urea Fertiliser manufacturing site is located at Daharki, 600 km north of Karachi-Pakistan.
The site has a production capacity of 6700 Met/day urea.Engro places emphasis on Health, safety and environment to a very profound level and the safety culture originates from the core values of the organisation. The company's HSE policy clearly states high focus on Health, Safety & Environment aspects both at its manufacturing site and off the job equally.The main tool which Engro believes in for uplifting HSE systems is to network & benchmark with the international best practices.
HSE considerations are an integral part of Engro's business activities.Starting from the Company President to the shop-floor level, all of the employees have a role to play for safe operation of the plant site. The organisational view of effective leadership is very clear in HSE policy of the company. The strategic planning and decision making is done at the top level Corporate HSE Committee which is headed by the Company President & CEO. The executives of organisation are members of this committee. These strategies are cascaded down to divisional level committees. The HSE organisation goes down to the bottom most layers, the front-line supervisor level safety committees. The entire leadership of organisation is structured in a way that strong focus and compliance is ensured through these committees.
Engro HSE systems are aligned with national and international standards. Being a process plant Engro's prime focus is to align its HSE systems with world renowned standards in Health & safety and the site is audited by the external auditors on two years frequency.
Engro has a two pronged HSE management system; one is related to Process Safety Risk Management (PSRM) and the other is Personnel Safety Management (PSM). PSRM deals with the Personnel, Technology & Safety Systems and Control-Tools to eliminate hazards which eventually lead to the elimination of process related injuries and incidents. Engro believes on RAGAGEP (Recognised and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices) and always refers to international standards for engineering.
PSM is about behaviour of employees. It begins with visibly felt leadership; the purpose is to eliminate personal injury & damage to equipment by creating safety awareness and mind-set of employees both on-the-job & off-the-job. There are strict monitoring tools to gauge and control the development in the employees and systems. By cultivating Safety-Smart attitude in employees, the safety performance has progressed each passing year.
Contractors are given equal importance in Engro HSE systems. Bonus and penalty clauses have been added into contracts, the reward and recognition system is designed in a way to motivate the contractor employees.
Safety training model is fully in place and around 40,366 man-hours are consumed annually on these trainings. The HSE impact outside Engro manufacturing facility is affected in many capacities. Mutual Assistance Plan (involving neighbour industries), Community Awareness on Emergency Response (CAER) program for awareness on emergency response of neighbouring community, annual HSE Seminar and co-ordination with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) also fall in this domain. CAER program is designed to involve community around the facility and educate them on safety & environment information. Engro's CSR Reports for 2009 & 2010 have been rated as the best 'CSR Report of the Year' by ACCA - WWF. So far Engro Fertilisers Limited has received 31 Safety performance awards from National Safety Council (when it was Exxon), USA; Achieved 02 Exxon Basic Chemicals President Awards; Golden Jubilee Award for the best practices in Occupational Safety, Health & Environment and 07 "National Forum for Environment and Health Annual Excellence" awards in a row.
At Engro, environmental awareness is deeply rooted since its inception. Various environmental projects have been carried out since then. The company has invested around Rs 390 Million on environmental projects from 1991 - 2010. In year 2001, Engro undertook a major Environment Improvement Project (EIP) of Rs 110.0 Million to improve the environmental performance at plant site.
Being socially responsible corporate, Engro has a continuous focus on environmental aspects and mitigation of their impacts. In 2004 EFERT Environmental Footprint was developed covering all air, land and water pollutants quantification. Engro achieved ISO-14001 certification in 2003 and upgraded with ISO-14001:2004 version in 2006.
Engro has special focus on educating the community on environmental issues and continuously investing in enhancing awareness in employees on environmental issues in terms of training, environmental articles circulation, walks and different competitions. Celebration of World Environment Day with full management involvement is one of the self-explanatory examples.
Engro strongly believes in environmental reporting and monitoring. From 2004, Engro has started self-reporting to Sindh Environmental Protection Agency covering NEQS parameters compliance status. Engro has stepped forward in getting excellence in Environmental Performance by engaging the British Safety Council's Environmental 5-star Audit Program. Intent behind getting this audit done was to gauge the existing environmental performances versus best practices in the world,subsequently uplifting the existing practices to meet world class performance in environmental management.
Energy conservation is important because consumption of non-renewable sources impacts the environment. Carbon dioxide is produced when fossil fuel (oil, coal, and gas) combusts in power generation, heating systems and is main contributor to the greenhouse gases (GHG) which are causing global warming. At Engro, natural gas is used as the main energy source for power and steam generation. With the incremental increase in plant production capacity over the last decade and a half, energy conservation has always been the main focus.
Engro gives equal importance to Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene (OHIH) and the company is complying with world standards. Engro has a periodical Health Risk Assessment program implemented. Exposure Control&Recovery Measures have been identified and health risks assessed through Hazards & Effects Management Process (HEMP) technique. The causes and effects of work related injuries& diseases and Hazards & Risks along with their outcomes have been gauged.
Engro has advanced HSE Management System which has eased its employees at every level by allowing them access to the Health, Safety & Environment database on their desktop.
