Sindh Minister for Environment, Shaikh Muhammad Afzal has said that around 10,000 saplings would be planted in the first phase under Model Green Zone in Korangi industrial Area (KIA). Inaugurating the KIA Green Zone project on Saturday evening at Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), he advised industrialists to plant one sapling in their industrial units to protect environment and make the industrial area green.
He said that Korangi industrial area comprises of around 4500 units, which means similar number of tress will be planted here. The minister also urged upon the industrialists to comply with the environment regulations as pressure to make pollution free industry is mounting from world organisations.
He said that industries could double their exports by turning their manufacturing units as environment friendly. "KIA will soon become a model green zone and all the industrialist should involve themselves in this campaign and should not dump any industrial waste in front of their factories", Sheikh said, adding that KATI should also devise a monitoring system in this regard.
He said that Rs 400 million has been allocated for the construction and beautification of Road 10000 and the work would soon be started after release of funds. The minister said that four effluent water treatment plants are in the pipeline and hoped work on these plants would commence soon. He agreed to the point of former Chairman, KATI, Mian Zahid Husnain to evolve an affective monitoring system. The Acting Chairman, KATI, Salimuz Zaman said in his welcome address that KATI would provide saplings and fertiliser to the KATI members on discount rates. Former Chairman, KATI, Gulzar Firoz said on this occasion that transport sector is the biggest polluter in this country.
