GCU vice chancellor gives away cash prizes to sportsmen, coaches
The Government College University Lahore hosted the 5th Higher Education Commission (HEC) cash prize distribution ceremony to recognise the efforts of as many as 73 talented sportsmen who performed exceptionally well at the National Games. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Ikram-ul-Haq was the chief guest at the ceremony which was attended by the coaches and faculty members of various universities and colleges.
Addressing on the occasion, Professor Ikram said, "Sports are not wastage of time, rather these make a person better human being, as sports teaches tolerance and encourages the spirit of competitiveness". He advised the sportsmen to never compromise on the standards of sportsmanship. "Sportsmanship is more important than winning an event", he insisted.
He said that GC University Lahore is as good in sports as in academics. The GCU offers seats on sports basis every year to encourage the best sportsmen. However, he added that the GCU sports merit is as high as its academic merit. He also acknowledged the contribution of HEC for the promotion of sports in the country.
HEC Director Sports Ahmad Yahya Khan lauded the efforts of sportsmen who represented HEC at National Games and brought laurels for their institutions as well as for HEC. He expressed the hope that HEC sportsmen will continue to put their best to achieve even better results in the years to come. Later, GCU VC Professor Ikramul Haq gave away cash prizes worth more than 1.1 million to the 73 sportsmen as well as their coaches.
