Dr Asim Hussain was elected senator on Saturday and is likely to be appointed as Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources, it is learnt. Dr Asim Hussain has already held two key positions in the government: Chairman of the National Reconstruction Bureau (NRB) and Advisor to the Prime Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources in 2008-09.
He was inducted into the federal cabinet after the 2008 general elections due to his close affiliation with President Asif Ali Zardari. Dr Asim is also personal physician of the President. Married with two children and owner of the Ziauddin group of hospitals, Dr Asim Hussain was born on 28 November 1953. After passing out from Petaro, Asim Hussain joined the Pakistan Army and obtained his MBBS degree and reached the rank of Lieutenant.
He opted to take early retirement from the Army. According to a handout issued by the office of the Election Commission of Pakistan on Saturday, former Justice Hamid Ali Mirza, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, announced "Dr Asim Hussain son of Dr Tajamul Hussain elected un-contested as a result of bye-election to the Senate of Pakistan against a general seat from Sindh province falling vacant due to resignation of Senator Dr Khatu Mal Jeewan for the un-expired term of office, due to expire on the 11th March, 2015."
